Raised by a single mother and a fisherman uncle, Gavin spent his entire life around boats and on the ocean. Upon graduating from high school, he decided to join the Navy and make a career out of spending time on boats. He married his high school girlfriend and two years later, they had a son, Jake. He was twenty, with a promising Navy career ahead of him, when all three of their lives changed forever. In the middle of a six-month deployment, in the middle of the ocean, he saw something he shouldn't have seen. Before he knew it, a fellow sailor had been murdered and the murder pinned on him. He was court-martialed, convicted of a crime he hadn't committed, and sentenced to a life sentence at Fort Leavenworth. His wife divorced him and later moved to England with their son and her new husband.

He'd been there for twelve years when his luck began to change. A bestselling author, who was a former NCIS agent, was looking through old case files doing research for a book when he came across Gavin's case and noted some inconsistencies. He did some investigating, went to the authorities, and eventually got Gavin's name cleared. Instead of another novel, he wrote a book about Gavin's ordeal instead, and when he died without an heir, Gavin inherited his (not inconsiderable) estate. Gavin now works for a charter cruise company, running cruises lasting from a few hours to a few days.
