He was born in Coronado, California to Marion LeMare, a high school English teacher, who would never tell him his father's identity. Lacking a father, instead he turned to his uncle, Saul, a fisherman, for guidance. From his mother, he got a love of English literature, particularly Shakepeare, and from his uncle, he got a love of boats and sailing.
